Timber Floor Oiling

Timber floors are used in a variety of places, including living rooms and exterior area like an outdoor deck. For the interior timber floors, Timber floor oiling is perfect.  The foot traffic, dirt, grime and other factors will affect their integrity and look of timber. Unsightly scratches may be left behind.  So timber needs to be oiled to make it last.

Meanwhile, outdoor deck flooring is exposed to harsh conditions. The weather where you live is going to play a significant role in the amount of wear and tear your outdoor deck flooring will go through. In Queensland, for example, the weather is suitable for outdoor entertaining all year round, which paved way to a lot of Brisbane homeowners constructing outdoor decks. But the downside is that your outdoor deck is also exposed to elements that can speed up its degradation. If you do not give attention to its care and maintenance, you might be sacrificing the longevity of your deck.

The first step to oiling timber is to diagnose your timber floors. Look for signs of wear and tear and that would entail maintenance or oiling. Severely weathered timbers can exhibit any of the following signs:

  • Blackened surface on the timber floor
  • Greyish appearance on the surface
  • The surface of the timber feels rough or furry

When any one (or all) of these three signs is present, you need to call a professional specializing in oiling timber. Note also that the exposure to sun and rain has stripped the nutrients from the wood, causing it to look lackluster. Moulds might have formed on the timber, too. This is something that is inevitable when there is moisture. When you notice these things, calling on the expertise of a professional will go a long way towards improving the appearance of your wooden floors.

Prior to oiling your floor, it will need to be sanded.  Please visit Timber Floor Sanding.

It is important that you have your floors oiled when problems crop up. This way, you avoid causing more damage on the timber floor. Oiling is not a permanent solution for your tired-looking floorboards, however. Oiling timber should be done on a periodic basis. Ideally, you need to oil your deck or timber floors every 6 to 12 months. You can ask the professional performing oiling on your wooden floor about the frequency of the oiling process.
